Surgical Procedures
When you visit Dr. Rani Anbarasu and the healthcare providers at Star Medical Associates, not only do you receive quality, comprehensive preventive care and disease management – but, depending on your medical needs, Dr. Anbarasu can also perform a variety of common surgical procedures right here in the office during your visit.
In most cases, this revolves around two general types of medical care:
Wound Care
Basic wound care services we offer include cleaning, stitching, and/or dressing a wide variety of wounds such as sores and lacerations.
Skin Lesions: Biopsy and Removal
A skin lesion is any abnormal growth or change in the skin. It may include lumps, bumps, open sores, and changes in color or texture.
In many cases, skin lesions are found during a skin cancer screening. If your doctor suspects cancer or infection, the lesion may be biopsied (removed for further testing in a lab). Lesions can be biopsied in several different ways, depending on the location, size, and type of lesion. Dr. Anbarasu commonly performs punch, shave, or excisional biopsies.
In some cases, Dr. Anbarasu will use cryotherapy – sometimes called cryoablation – to safely, painlessly, and effectively destroy specific skin tissue with the application of liquid nitrogen. This freezes the tissue, which subsequently flakes off. Cryotherapy is most often used to remove warts or other unsightly but benign growths, acne, and scars. It may also be used to remove precancerous growths called actinic keratosis.
Occasionally, fluid-filled growths called cysts can develop and may require drainage and surgical removal. Most cysts are benign (noncancerous) but can sometimes cause pain or feel warm or tender to the touch. In some cases, anti-inflammatory medication may be used to bring down inflammation associated with a cyst.
When skin lesions occur throughout the body, it may indicate a systemic problem such as an allergic reaction, chickenpox, or shingles – each requiring a different type of therapy or treatment.
