Bladder Scans

If you have urine flow problems, including urinary incontinence , your doctor may order a diagnostic bladder scan.

Bladder scans performed at Star Medical Associates include:

  • Post-void residual (PVR) volume scans – This scan identifies the amount of urine that remains in the bladder after urinating. It involves the use of a handheld ultrasound device guided over the skin of the lower abdomen, in the area of the bladder.
  • Uroflowmetry – Your doctor will ask you to urinate in a toilet fitted with a device that can measure the volume, speed, and rate at which urine is released during urination.

These tests can help diagnose urinary tract issues or bladder obstruction.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is used to measure your heart rate and rhythm. Your doctor may order an ECG if she suspects heart problems like irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) or blocked arteries that may be restricting blood flow to your heart (coronary artery disease).

An ECG is conducted by putting sensors on the skin of your torso. These sensors are attached to a machine that records the electrical activity of your heart while at rest. The test usually takes about 10 minutes to complete, and you remain laying down the entire time. It is a quick, painless, and noninvasive in-office procedure many doctors rely on as a first line diagnostic exam for problems with the heart.

Pulmonary Function Tests

These tests measure how well your lungs are functioning. Pulmonary function tests, or PFTs, include a number of different tests that can measure lung capacity, airflow rates, and more. PFTs are used to help identify health conditions such as:

We perform a variety of tests in our office, including spirometry. This test measures the amount of air your lungs can hold. You simply breathe into a special mouthpiece that records the volume and speed of your breath.

Pulse Oximetry

This noninvasive method of measuring the oxygen level of your blood is used to identify how well oxygen is being pumped throughout your body. Problems may indicate any number of cardiovascular conditions, including heart disease or problems with your blood vessels. It may also be used to identify whether a new medication or other treatment is working for you.

No needle is necessary with a pulse oximetry – and no blood is drawn, either. Rather, a sensor is clipped onto your finger where a small beam of light passes through your blood. Light absorption is measured to determine how oxygenated your blood is.
